What is the connection between allergic rhinitis and sinusitis?

Sinusitis refers to the swelling or inflammation of the sinus mucous membrane. This swelling causes the sinus openings that normally drain mucous to be blocked. Mucous then stagnates, causing facial pain and headaches besides attracting infection.

Sinusitis will almost always happen after rhinitis and rarely occurs alone. As the nasal and sinus passages are so closely interrelated, otolaryngologists now refer to sinusitis as rhinosinusitis.

What is the difference between Lectranal® and other allergy medicines such as antihistamines?

Although antihistamines help relieve symptoms after an allergy has occurred, it still leaves the immune system in a hypersensitive state, ever ready to flare-up. Lectranal® works differently by addressing the root of the immune system’s hypersensitive nature. With Lectranal®, the immune system is directed to normal response (non-hypersensitive state) and imparted a memory to help it to recognise harmless allergens. By doing so, harmless allergens are neutralised without the nose flaring up into inflammation.

I started with a nose allergy which has gotten worse in recent years. Just breathing has become a problem. What is happening?

Nasal allergies constitute a chronic inflammatory condition of the nose. As the nose and the lungs belong to “one airway”, uncontrolled inflammatory reactions in the nose will eventually affect the lungs.

A 23-year-long study reported in Allergy & Asthma Proceedings 2002 confirms that one in every three people with uncontrolled allergic rhinitis goes on to develop asthma. As asthma ranks as one of the top five most expensive conditions in the world to treat, early recognition and treatment of allergic rhinitis and rhinosinusitis presents a valuable opportunity to reduce the prevalence and severity of asthma.

Currently my allergies are uncomfortable but I can still function when I take my antihistamine. Is there a need to control my allergies?

People with allergies have an immune system which easily flare-up when exposed to things in the environment. Left uncontrolled, allergies are likely to worsen in terms of symptoms severity besides the increased risk of new allergies developing as the immune system become increasingly hypersensitive. The other co-morbidities of allergies development include chronic sinusitis, middle ear infections, upper respiratory infection, sleep disorders, nasal polyposis and asthma.

For instant, patients with allergic rhinitis, an inflammatory processes happening in the nose if left untreated will eventually stream down to the lungs. This means that if nasal allergies are not well managed, asthma will be a consequence. A 23-year-long study reported in Allergy & Asthma Proceedings showed that one in every three people with allergic rhinitis goes on to develop asthma. As asthma is generally permanent at the time of diagnosis, the recognition and early treatment of allergic rhinitis provides a valuable window of opportunity for reducing the prevalence and severity of this condition.

How does Lectranal® help against allergies?

Lectranal® helps prevent the onset of allergies by modulating imbalances in the immune system which lead to allergies. With Lectranal®, the immune system is directed to normal response besides acquiring a memory against the allergen so that it can be efficiently dealt with upon future encounters.

How soon can I expect results?

The clinical study has shown that 70% of the patients with nasal allergies have an improvement after taking Lectranal® for 2 months.

Can I take Lectranal® when I am pregnant or breast-feeding?

Lectranal® is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding ladies.

What is the recommended dosage?

Recommended dosage for adult and children over 12 years old:
Take ONE capsule TWICE daily, on an empty stomach or half an hour before meals.

For the first few weeks, you may still require your usual allergy medications just to ease symptoms as it will take time for Lectranal® to work. Over time, you will find that the allergies will not appear as often nor as severely hence not requiring the use of medicines. You may also find that you do not have to rely so much on your existing medication.

How long do I need to take Lectranal® for?

Lectranal® has a good safety record. It does not have any kind of toxicity effects. Patients can take Lectranal® for as long as they wish, to prevent the onset of allergies hence reducing their risk of other comorbidities like asthma.
